Frisco Dad Sees “Go Deep” Billboard, Returns From Deep Ellum With Tattoo, Opinions About Vinyl
A billboard told North Texans to 'Go Deep' into Deep Ellum. Brent Kowalczyk, 44, of Frisco, took it personally.
Deep Ellum, Dallas – A new ad campaign urging North Texans to “Go Deep” into Dallas’s historic entertainment district claimed its first convert this month, when Frisco dad Brent Kowalczyk, 44, saw a billboard on the Tollway and drove 31 miles south for the first time since 2011.
“I figured it was about football,” he said. “Then my wife said it was a neighborhood. Below LBJ. I packed a first-aid kit and my Costco card, in case they had a Costco.”
They did not. What Deep Ellum did have was “live music, murals, and a guy named Moth who sold me a record player out of a milk crate.”
“You can spot the suburbs,” said a bartender who goes by Saint. “They parallel park like they’re defusing a bomb, and they tip in Chick-fil-A gift cards.”
By 11 p.m., Kowalczyk had seen a band called Dishonorable Mention and gotten a tattoo of the Frisco water tower on his ankle “for irony.” He has since called his HOA “the man” and quit wearing quarter-zips.
He plans to return by DART. “Moth says real ones take the train,” he said. “Wait. Does the train go to Frisco?” It does not.
